Distractions

Distractions

5 Star Rating

Synopsis:

“We are all pawns in someone else’s game.”

No one knows this better than Violet Phillips. When her beloved mentor goes missing, she suspects murder, which sends her spiraling out of control and away from the stable life she has built for herself. Soon, her past will begin seeping out with a vengeance.

“I will teach you how this game is played.”

Self-destruction threatens to consume Violet when a handsome neighbor that has been watching her from afar intervenes on her behalf. Shepard Leone may be six years younger, but it does not stop him from seducing her ears as well as her heart.

“Fascinating how much life can change in twenty-four hours.”

When Violet is forced to go down a dark road into a past where she must confront the demons that nearly destroyed her, will she be unable to deviate? Struggling with the loss of her missing friend, Shepard will find a way in and reawaken desires that she thought were forever lost. But Violet never forgets that if you are not careful, distractions will be your undoing.

Review:

Distractions is an edgy love story full of suspense. Usually when I thought I had the story figured out…BAM! There is absolutely no way I could have predicted what was going to happen with this read. Distractions kept attention, and there was so much in the storyline that was only partially told and god knows I wanted to know it all. I literally didn’t want to miss a thing!!!

Violet has led a very colorful life that has left her jaded. Will she ever be able to get past her trust issues? Shepard is her younger violin playing next door neighbor, he's always there for her. Connor is Violet's past, but will he stay that way?? You will definitely want to get to know Shepard and Connor ;-)

If you are looking for a book that offers so much more than a romance, Distractions by J.L. Brooks is it! This nail-biting, edgy, and absolutely sexy read will have your mind racing. Distractions will grab your attention and hold it until the bitter end.

Chapter One

He bent over and softly placed his lips on the tip of her nose, just as he had done for as long as she could remember. “I’ll be back,” he whispered quietly, hesitating before finally pulling away.
Their eyes met, and she knew, she could see the familiar distance in them just as she saw only a couple months before. But this time was going to be different. Unlike the last time, she wouldn’t know where to go or what to do. She wouldn’t be able to search for him and take him by the hand, and guide him away.
His eyes slowly moved from hers as he turned and walked towards the door, only to stop a moment, lingering in the doorway like he was second guessing his decision. She slowly sat up, hoping his mind had changed, but her hope quickly vanished as he continued out the door and into the hall.
She watched him through her window, walking down the brightly lit hall, knowing it would be the last time she ever saw him. That it would be the last time she’d hear his voice, the last time his fresh, yet smoky, scent filled her nose. She knew it would be the last time she’d feel her body come to life, ignited like a flame, from the touch of his lips on hers while the warmth of his breath delicately canvassed her body.
He didn’t have to say it; she could sense it, just like she’d done before. Only this time, the gut twisting feeling she got when he spoke, told her what he couldn’t say, and the unspoken words in his eyes. His azure colored eyes that still had a way of making her knees weak and heart slam against her chest, all the while small sparks of electricity soared through her body, all with a single simple look.
Lennox sat there in her room. Dazed, as the numbness slowly crept up and through her body, into her heart and soul, as the voice in her head spoke in loud volumes, telling her over and over, the things she didn’t want to believe. Her eyes, still fixated on his back, watching as he became further and further away; almost out of sight.
She swallowed, trying to rid the dryness that made it hard to breathe. Her mouth finally unfroze and her lips parted. “Caleb,” she spoke quietly, meaning for it to sound louder, so he could hear the gut wrenching pain that filled her normally soft voice, and he’d come back to her. But all that sounded was a whisper ending with a small sob.
He was her all, he’d always be her all, and she knew it the day he unexpectedly walked back into her life. That moment, when their eyes met, she knew they were made for one another, that they were meant to be. They were each other’s missing piece and he found her, in all his gorgeous gratifying glory, grabbing her by the hand, and her entire heart and soul.
Together Lennox and Caleb went places. Places she never, in her life, thought she’d ever go. The things she saw and witnessed are of things no one should have to see or speak of again, because once was enough. His path took them on a journey through hell, right to the burning pit, where, when given the chance to leave, she stayed and fought for him, and a way back.
She did things along the way that she’s not proud of. Things she’ll never be able to forgive herself for, unthinkable things that changed her demeanour and relationships with the people in her life. Lennox, being the typical girl next door, would never, in a million years, do what she did but when it came to Caleb, she’d do anything.
Through it all Lennox lost a lot along the way, important things. But at the time nothing was more important than Caleb and her being together. They learned once that not being together was more toxic then actually being together. So, in her mind, there wasn’t a doubt, or voice, telling her she made the wrong choice five months earlier, when he walked through the doors of Fizzy Wigs; a local cafe in Spruce Hill.
The scary part was, after knowing everything and going through all they went through, Lennox, given the chance to do so, would go back and do it all over; not changing a damn thing.
She continued to watch him walk away, rounding the corner, and disappearing from her sight without a glance back. The breath she didn’t know she’d been holding rushed out, as if someone came up to her, and punched her in the stomach. It was then she realized it hadn’t been enough, none of it was.
And even more heartbreakingly so, neither was she.
At that moment realization hit, and she was on her way back to hell, only this time she was going alone, and the battle out was a far bigger challenge then the last.
With her eyes still on the last place she saw him, silently wishing him to come back, a man in a white coat obstructed her view. Blinking, she looked up at him, his face unreadable as he looked down at the clipboard in his somewhat feminine hands. When he finished flipping through the white sheets of paper, his eyes lifted and met hers.
He witnessed, through her eyes, her world crumble and shatter around her, leaving nothing but an empty, hollow shell in its place.
“Ms Ward....” he said carefully, making note of how delicate and fragile she looked.
Lennox sat there looking at nothing but dead air and the small dust particles as they fluttered around, the room was silent, and she didn’t even hear when the man spoke. It was as if someone had muted real life.
Her mind was on only one thing.
Caleb.
When he left her there in her room, he knew he wasn’t leaving alone, that he was taking her with him, maybe not physically, but in every other way possible. It was more than a piece of her he took, it was more than a part of her, it was every piece.
Every. Single. Fucking. Piece.
And she let him.
“Ms Ward, did you hear what I just said?” the man’s comforting voice echoed through the room.
Lennox shook her head, pushing the thoughts aside, as she looked up at him, and watched his lips move as he repeated the words that not only sent icy waves through her already numb body, but caused what little was left of her world to shatter.
And that’s when it happened, that’s when she began to drown. Drowning in memories, like a surfer in a wild tidal wave, as the gates opened and everything from the past five months came flooding back.

Excerpt:

Standing on the landing in front of Blake’s door knocking, my cell phone vibrates.  Reaching in and pulling it out of my pocket, I open a text from Blake.

Blake: It’s open. Come in and find me ;)

With a smile spreading across my face, I open the door walking in.  Closing it behind me, I walk past the couch, tossing my bag on it.

Searching for Blake, I go to the last room I haven’t looked in yet. Opening her door I’m frozen in place when I see a very sexy Blake standing in front of me, wearing a pair of black stilettos, black stockings with garter belts attached to a pair of lacy boy shorts, and a black bra that has me salivating at the sight of her.  My dick jumps to attention, as a white satin tie hangs around her neck and over her breasts, the tip skims above her belly button.  Her wavy hair hangs freely down her back.  A pair of scarlet red square framed glasses rests on her face completing her look.  Spinning around slowly letting me take in the full effect of this vixen who is Blake Riley, I say huskily, “Well this is a nice surprise.”

Sauntering towards me, swaying her hips back and forth, I clear my throat when she reaches me.  Tracing her finger along my collarbone and up my neck, she leans into me and whispers seductively, “Well hello Mr. James.  I see you got my text.  I seem to be in need of some assistance tonight.” Tracing the shell of my ear with the tip of her tongue, my body stiffens, as the bulge in my pants grows harder.  Grabbing my hand, Blake guides me towards a chair that sits in the middle of her room surrounded by the soft glow of candles placed sporadically throughout.  Sitting down, I rest my arms on the armrests of the chair.  With hooded eyes, I ask Blake, “Are you sure you want to play this game with me?”

Her eyebrow lifts as she answers, “This is my game Mr. James and you have to follow the rules, or else you don’t get to play.” She leaves me sitting in the chair as she walks across the room.  With her back to me, she says, “There are two rules, and if you break either of them there will be consequences.  I’ll tell you when the rules no longer apply,  then and only then are you allowed to do what you want to me.  Rule number one: Do not touch me at all; if you do, I’ll restrain you.  Rule number two: Don’t speak.  If you say one word, well, you’ll miss one hell of a show.” Fiddling with her iPod, Beyonce’s “Dance for You,” comes over the speakers.

Walking back to me and standing within my reach, she leans down so that we’re eye to eye, asking, “Do you understand my rules?”

Is Hunter willing to be disloyal to his best friends in order to be with the one girl he's always secretly wanted?

DEE'S REVIEW: 5 BITING LIPS MMMMMHHHMMM

Trying Not To Love You grabbed me from the beginning. I don't have brothers but I had very protective boy cousins and their friends were protective as well. I related with MacKenzie and her overbearing yet totally loveable brothers, Jackson, Cooper and Mason. Her friendship with Hailey reminded me of my relationship with my best friend. Every aspect of this book was relate-able and realistic. I fell in love with the whole family. And by family I mean not only MacKenzie's family but Hunter's as well. Hunter, sigh, what an idiotic sweety! I loved him but I also wanted to slap him. WAKE UP DUDE! I have to admit I kinda fell for Dominic too. Toward the end. The Dominic in the beginning won zero points with me!
Each character was well developed even the secondary characters. They were rounded characters with flaws and all. MacKenzie takes you on a ride you don't want to get off of. Even after the book ends, TWO days later, I am still living in Megan's world. I have a SERIOUS case of book hangover. No matter how many Tylenol I take it won't go away. The only reason I didn't finish this book in one day was because I started it late in the day and had to sleep! But you can guarantee I was up at 6 am on SUNDAY (I don't get up till 8:30-9 on Sundays) to continue reading and finished it early! Left with a "What the hell just happen?" feeling. I have read some great books lately but I haven't had a case of book hangover in a while. THANK YOU MEGAN!!
MacKenzie and Hunter's love story is real, heartbreaking, full of love and family. I wish I was a fantastic review writer for Ms. Megan. I don't feel like I am giving this book the proper praise. As a debut novel it was wonderfully written. Megan did a great job driving the story forward. I never felt a lull and never waited for it to pick back up. It continuously moved forward. The editing was done well and it has a beautiful cover. Great Job on a debut novel Megan!!
Now then, the biggest part of my hangover has to do with the massive cliff hanger at the end. Would I not read it if I had none there was this HUGE cliff? YES!! Over and Over again I would say YES! Even though the ending leaves you hanging and waiting breathlessly for book 2 (YES there is a book 2 coming!!) you'll love the love story and rollercoaster you are taken on. Go Get This Book NOW! Wendy's Review:
5 emotionally staggering stars!

I don't even know where to begin with this review. I've never in my entire reading life read something as staggeringly emotional as this book was for me. I was up and down and turned inside out almost right from the beginning.

The entire story has some kind of reconnection with the past. I was so torn on how to feel about this at first and then about 7% into the book, I got it.

"Because you wanted to know whether or not I was over you, and I wanted to know what you were like when you were on a date." He hesitated for the briefest of moments before he proceeded to completely blow my mind. "When we finally have our time together, I want to know that it's different for you. That I'm different from the boys you date."

Lorraina has to go home for the holiday season after her boss decides she's closing shop for Christmas. Spending time with her family is not on her list of favorite things to do, even for the holiday season. But, when she arrives home and gets the chance to see Michael, coming home is the best thing she's done in years.

"Lorraina, you had to have known that I was bluffing when I acted like I was over you. I have your initials tattooed on my arm. I have your face tattooed in my brain. I have your soul tattooed in my heart."

You will not get the expected outcome with this story! It will rip you up and spit you out. It will open you up to a new way of writing and maybe get you thinking that this is what actually should have happened. Michael will burrow down into your heart and leave you aching.

I really wanted to hate this story by the ending, but I just can't. I realize now after taking a couple of days to regroup, that this is just the way that some things end. I was heart broken and crushed, but ultimately I was enthralled with how I could feel the emotional bonds so closely with a story that could have so much devastation entrenched in it.

I was always such a coward when it came to him

He was just Michael. Flawed but good. Off limits to me but the most grounding force in my life.

There aren't anymore words coming to me for this review. All I can do is tell you to pick this book up and read it. It will definitely throw you for a loop or two, but you will not be disappointed.

Review of OFF LIMITS by Sawyer Bennett with Giveaway!

 Book Description:
“There is a vulnerability there, hovering just below the surface. And I want to pick at it until I expose it. Then I want to kiss it."

Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation.  It's certainly the easiest way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.

Wendy's 5 Sexy Bitten Lips Review:

Nixon "Nix" Caldwell is smokin hot!

We first meet Emily in Off Sides (Ryan and Danny's story) and she's a snotty bitch that I loathed upon first meeting. However, closer to the end, we got a glimpse of her decent side. In Off Limits we really see how much she grew into her own person outside of the reins of her mother. Emily is outgoing and high spirited and well loved and....she's wonderful. Until it comes to Nix. And then, she's just crazy! Of course after meeting Nix, I certainly can't blame her.

Nixon is a former Marine just looking to work in his metal shop and get his house finished. What he doesn't expect while staying with his brother, is a totaled motorcycle and chance encounter with a beautiful smart ass.

To pay off her debt to Nix, Emily starts to work for him doing organization work in his shop. The chemistry is immediate! Emily is like the moth to Nix's flame and they're both going to get burned, but will it be a steamy sensual burn or will it be they kind of burn you just can't recover from?

There is one thing that neither of them can fight

Oh, it is! and, it's enough to have you fanning your panties.

When Emily is in a bad situation, she calls on Nix to help her out. After playing hero for the night, Nix is reluctant to let Emily know him, but she's slowly catching on to his habit of keeping people out by being standoffish.

Nix is pushed even closer to Emily after a man from her past shows up.

This story just gets better and better the further you read. I was glued to the pages and couldn't put it down. I got angry, excited and really emotional at points. I loved watching Em and Nix grow and find each other.

Sawyer Bennett has managed to keep me in the throes of passion between two angsty people and I love it!
